Isn’t it Time We Pick Ourselves?

When the teacher asked questions, most of the students raised their hands. The ambitious or popular students were usually chosen first to respond with the answer. This situation took place often, throughout the day. If you were selected and didn’t respond with the correct answer, good luck being picked again, anytime soon .
The subtle message was :
1.   You weren’t popular.

2.   The teacher didn’t trust your judgment.

3.   What you thought didn’t matter.
During the summer before a basketball game, it was common for the two most popular and gifted athletes to choose their teams from a select group. The decision to choose the most gifted athletes would be chosen first, usually followed by choosing the most popular or friends of the person doing the picking. Being one of the last two possible selections indicated you weren’t valued as much and if there was any hesitancy as who to choose it didn’t speak well for either of you. Being the last player selected meant you were “stuck” (no pick for you) on one of the team’s roster.
Being last meant:
1.   You weren’t very good.

2.   You weren’t very popular.

3.   You weren’t really wanted.
The same process appears throughout your career in lieu of promotions, positions, hiring and lay-offs. It’s all part of the same system of the Industrial Age. Instead of recognizing and nurturing individuals strength we follow the same rules rewarding the gifted, popular and our friends, while ignoring the rest. For 100 years, it was the only way to ensure fitting-in, compliance and conformity.
Not anymore.
Picking yourself is all that matters. Artists always pick themselves; they don’t wait for permission, acceptance or a christening. We always felt artists were strange, different or didn’t quite fit-in. Artists aren’t concerned with the status quo, survey results or a spreadsheet, their focus is strictly on their core mission .
It's no coincidence artists are the catalyst of change. The system refers to those people as inventors, however; they were artists first and foremost. Ford, Gates or Edison didn’t form a consensus group, become elected or chosen by anyone. Picasso, Tchaikovsky, Dylan and Symon picked themselves. Some said they were crazy and wasting their time, but their determination to succeed came from within.
 Art touches our lives, inspires movements and forges technology.
As we sit on the cusp of change in the post-industrial revolution- isn’t it time we pick ourselves?

You are Now Free!

If your team is filled with people who work for the company, you’ll soon be defeated by tribes of people who work for a cause.

One of the favorite terms of the Industrial Age has been “teamwork.” The word is heavily touted when the slave drivers or gatekeepers want more work from less people or pitch an idea. Teamwork is a requirement on the football field, marching band and battlefield; but it never scaled well with the general workforce.
Ever notice when you are about to be laid-off “teamwork” is never mentioned? If they really believed in their own submission then why not just ask if someone wants to take an unemployment check for the good of the team. After all, we’re a team, right?
 Sadly, it is a word used only when management wants to spin the latest, greatest technique or philosophy. When I think of teamwork it reminds me of “slaves that paddled vessels from sea to land”, a mindless entity that must be given simple instructions to navigate. It also reminds me of the project that keeps being held-up because someone or one group didn’t finish their assignment at the deadline.
Teamwork is a label for mediocrity. Innovation or precision is rarely used to motivate by inept leaders. Failure is easier to swallow, when it’s a team effort or detraction. It’s good enough to use as a drill or exercise, but difficult to ensure has a means to excellence. That would require guts, courage and accountability.
 Few leaders understand the significance of those words and are less willing to take the chance at standing-out from the pack. That would truly mean risk and in a society captivated by fitting-in, not many care enough to stick their neck out. That’s probably why people don’t get too excited by teamwork.
I am happy to not apply for an advertisement that states: “We want team players only” or hear someone say: “I am not sure if you’re a good fit for the team” during an interview. What those expressions imply is the Industrial Age notion of fitting-in, compliancy, not rocking the boat and “do what we say.” You have no mind, soul, heart or the capabilities to stand-out, lead or discover a better way. It sends the message of being a cog and nothing more.
When everyone is committed towards the same outcome because they believe in something, have a vested interest in the idea and care; it’s a beautiful process. When people are told or given a manual to follow the plan it’s boring, repetitive and the results are less than stellar!
For more than 100 years, we believed ourselves to be at the mercy of a few who gave us the instructions, used us like pawns to generate power and financial success. The game is changing rapidly and opportunity awaits you. But you’ll never find it by staying in the Industrial Age.
Like the advert says: “You are now free to walk about the cabin.”

The Future is up to You!

We’ve spent 100 years schooling our children and selves into becoming a “cog in the wheel” for the system. We created compliance by asking students to memorize a formula of history, math and science. Instead of recognizing the interests of the people- the system set the agenda.
It told us what to wear, how to respond and what to think. The bigger picture enforced the rules, fostering everyone to get-in-line, wait your turn and don’t question authority. It amazes me how many people in the workforce have relinquished their minds, hearts and souls in an effort to fit in. Trained by fear to perform a repetitive duty and to keep your thoughts to yourself in the effort to earn a living or possibly retire with some dignity.
Is it any wonder we have so many cases of depression, so many needs for medication and so little regard for our workforce or fellow man?
I really enjoy talking with people and presenting my case for the reason of why we are at a crossroads for the future. I’ve avoided playing the political arguments intentionally. To me, it’s not as relevant as understanding the concept that we are engaged in and responding to the current social environment.
We are experiencing a giant cultural shift in how we do business. The current format of the Industrial Age is undergoing dramatic change. Change- that is quicker than ever before. Technology advances are enabling us to move faster than a speeding train. There will be a new breed of people like Henry Ford, Steve Jobs, and Bill Gates. In fact, due to new technology some of the next inventors are already here.
What does that have to do with me?
If you want to be a part of the shift this is your free ticket. Recognizing you have been a pawn in the game is the key to breaking out and enabling yourself to be competitive. Forming an alliance with others who understand this new direction will provide you with a powerful network capable of embracing change and quickly adjusting. Merely staying put is a guarantee to end-up like the great Buffalo hunt; that followed the leader over the cliff.
Which would you rather be?
If you can’t jump ship at least realize you’ve been bamboozled. The current ride isn’t going to improve until you change your own thinking. It’s a long ride to the bottom of the sea. Do we really want to go there?
 I hope not, we’ve wasted enough time, energy and health in subscribing to a life with diminishing outcomes. Even the so-called recession was a result of the early stages of Industrial restructuring. The “big” stores, factories and other organizations are slowly dying. Jobs that exist today will be gone in 15-25 years and the “traditional” education will be replaced.
So perhaps one of my biggest challenges is to attempt to stay ahead of the curve and hope people will open their minds, despite a life-long indoctrination into compliance, fitting in and being average. Forget the gold watch, retirement party and focus on a more likely scenario:
The future is up to you and better yet; it doesn’t require permission because- you’ve been given a free ticket. Now go make something interesting and creative. It’s your art, your destiny and legacy to do something meaningful!

Surveys- The Art of telling a Story?


For decades we wondered why survey results were somewhat hidden criteria. We scratched our heads wondering why the obvious issues weren’t addressed. Why employ consultants to be the middle man, wouldn’t a standard form with the right questions be quicker, accurate, cost effective and worthy? If some glaring issues needed to be resolved surely management could correct the situation.
Being naรฏve was the first mistake when we bought into the purpose of the survey.
The truth is surveys are a tool to gage how effective the organizations marketing campaign is perceived. Identifying what works and what needs tweaked. Surveys aren’t designed to identify your likes or dislikes. They don’t value your opinion, care about you or your needs.
It’s about perception and persuasion and buying into a story. It’s never been about fair, right or wrong.
The questions are skewed based on the marketing agenda. The consulting firm can offer suggestions on how to improve the organizational message. After implementation this ensures the same consultant group is brought back to follow-up with the next survey. Chances are improvement will be part of the results, once again ensuring the effectiveness of the organization and the consulting firm.
If the consultants can show desired output it’s a win-win situation for everybody.
Well not quite everybody.
When organizations settle for the outcome addressed on a typical roadside billboard, newspaper advertisement or media commercials the real story is never conveyed.
This is the reason most people forego Internet online marketing surveys- it provides no usefulness to the individuals needs.
Besides, we already know it’s a waste of time.

Posturing 101

Behave in a way that is intended to impress or mislead others.

The act of people posturing is a daily ritual in some establishments. It’s a frightening display of human neediness within a fluttering workplace environment. When the environment becomes unstable with rumors, layoffs, closings and uncertainty; the emotion of fear produces some strange twists in behavior patterns. Suddenly the competition to be important and publicized becomes top priority in the whirlwind to be noticed.
Those in fear of their jobs seek popularity and publicized moments above everything else. Their desire to earn mass attention is what triggers every act of good will, performance and achievement. Fear produces posturing of epic proportions within management and employees.
I find nothing wrong in attempting to stand-out in a crowd. But to continually push beyond the boundaries, posturing becomes an addiction for all the wrong reasons. Exemplary work is fabulous, but throwing everyone under the bus to achieve stardom cheapens the reason.
Doing good deeds doesn’t require extraordinary effort, nor does it have a need to boast. Posturing inflates the ego and is a narcissist’s best friend. It depreciates the value of co-workers or team effort; causes dissention and promotes the selfish, shameless promotion of self. The long term destruction produces a lack of trust and unfair objective view of others.
It’s easy to see who the most insecure people are within a company. There’s a difference between a sincere act of generosity and a piranha like feeding frenzy fighting to be noticed. The distorted view becomes an endless competition among a few. The reality is misleading; it’s outlandish, ridiculous and over-the-top.
At the heart of the problem is the workplace environment. When an organization is motivated by fear the results are negative. The system in place is unaccountable for its actions and results. Posturing is viewed as a bench mark of effectiveness and used to increase the culture uneasiness.
Companies operating in this mode don’t offer counseling, truth or comfort. It’s a cat and mouse game of control by state of fear. Longevity doesn’t bode well for organizations seeking long term stability by practicing fear mongering.
It’s not 1947 and using Gestapo type tactics ruins reputations!
When you see an unusual display of people posturing for their livelihoods chances are: the culture is the problem and at the root is fear.

Risk is Now the New Safe!


We see people in the workplace going through the motions, completing task after given task. A few of those folks take the time to add value to their work while most just see the cycle of repetition as a means to receive the next paycheck.  Sometimes it’s due to an overworked environment and less than optimal staffing; other times it’s a case of employees accepting mediocrity.

It amazes me how many employees are habitually lulled to pointless tasks just to appear busy at work. How you can spend years doing the same thing over and over and not somehow feel cheated.

Instead of being productive with your time and life, you allow your boss, company or yourself to trade your mind for a physical quest in exchange for a fee. For compliance and obedience your most valuable asset has been shutdown. This was the way of the Industrial Age.

The message has been sent that you aren’t able to do anything else in life. Accept your role, surrender your dreams and stay in line. It’s all about fitting in and being a team player, don’t make a ruckus, do what you are told, don’t ask questions. Consider yourself, lucky to even have a job!  

This conditioning ensures you will never attempt to break-out of the prison walls. Never thinking of your future, take a risk or recognize opportunity. The parameters become an accepted form of fate. It doesn’t have to be this way.  

We are all capable of doing remarkable feats far more than we ever imagined. If you’re not moving forward you’re running backwards. Don’t waste valuable time trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. We only get one life, don’t waste it on stupid stuff.

Life can be rewarding, fun and prosperous if we step outside the gates. Do what you’ve always dreamed about. Find a way, set goals and make it happen. Don’t wait for permission, do it now. Research your ideas on the internet, seek good advice from entrepreneurs, take a class, but start now.

The Industrial Age is dying. Being a compliant and obedient employee has always been a dime-a-dozen in numbers. That’s not living a meaningful life, nor does it bring success.

Be rare, unique, creative and motivated. That’s what the new frontier is about.

Risk is now the new safe!

Lessons Learned in Commission Sales!


The local markets in Lexington, Ohio are no longer carrying my book. Sales through Wayne’s Country Market dissipated to the point of not justifying shelf space. 

The other shop basically ripped me off by losing  a portion of my sales money or failed to charge correctly on a half a dozen books. This was really disappointing since 10% of the sales were to be donated to the Lexington, Ohio High School Music Boosters and a relative of the store formerly served with the Music Boosters.
Previously in 2011, I was shorted on sales for the book perhaps due to the store offering another book being sold for $17.00 at the store. I had provided the store with flyers and posters and a plastic display case for the book; the owner claimed the staff must have charged incorrectly for the book. I reasoned it was no big deal. I would just absorb the small loss.
When I dropped by the store (this Spring) to view how the sales were going;  I still had two or three books out of a dozen left on display. The envelope of my earnings was missing of prior books sold. The owner didn’t offer to compensate anything for my loss. I was upset and surprised at the total lack of accountability from him. He blamed his clerks for not separating my money from the customers overall sales. The loss- $100.00.
I purposely walked out of the store, knowing a couple copies were still on display.
So earlier this week, I stopped by to see if the handling of the sales had improved. The owner looked down under the counter and said the last book was their forever, finally sold and he didn’t have any money from the sale. No apology- Nothing!

I walked out of the store disgusted.
It’s a shame this establishment given their history and connection to the community in Lexington, Ohio couldn’t have been accountable. I personally don’t recommend shopping at this establishment because they failed to honor a simple verbal agreement regarding commission sales.

The Good News!

I will compensate the 10% fund out of my own pocket for the lost or stolen money from those sales. In hindsight, I should have monitored sales closer early on, but given the reputation and connection to the boosters program I really didn’t expect this outcome or their inability to correct the problem.
Brent Stephenson of Wayne’s Country Market did a terrific job of selling my book, positioning my book within the store for optimal sales and keeping excellent track of sales by issuing a check for every dozen books sold. Given the volume of business Wayne's Country Market provides, Brent and the owners are outstanding people to work with! I highly recommend shopping at their market.

Raw Opportunity Surrounds Us!

Our eyes observe all sorts of activity daily in our surroundings. Choices are constantly marketed to us as we drive, walk, or journey through media channels. We are so busy ingesting the messages, we often don’t think to use our own imagination or envision a possibility towards the future. Visionaries like Zig Ziglar, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, or Steve Jobs are few and far between.
We often witness entire industries morph into something different without recognizing the opportunity to get involved. Culture captivates us to the point of being a participant player, instead of an instigator of change. Like it or not, Las Vegas is one city that re-invents itself every decade or so. It truly doesn’t sleep or stay content with current themes, barriers or extravaganza.
There’s no better time to start your own future than now!
What are you an expert in? What idea have you toyed with for years?
 Opportunity exists everywhere if we focus on what’s missing or needed. We don’t need another pharmacy on every corner, that replaced the old gas stations on every corner; but there is always a developing trend quietly sleeping waiting to become the “I wished I had thought of that, idea!”
Twenty years ago, sports card memorabilia became a rage until the market was purposely over saturated. Precious Moments, Betsy Clark, Cherished Teddies David Winter’s Cottages and TY Beanie Babies had a long run. Lots of income was generated off of the collectible industries. Those able to get in at the ground level could sustain a long-term business by becoming the leader in current trends.
Discovering your niche is half the battle. Finding your niche isn’t rocket science. What are you an expert in or follow passionately? What insight or value is currently missing in those businesses now?
Opportunity is only a problem away. Find some system needing improving and retool it. Spend time assessing a needed service or improving an existing service.
 Attempt to become the Ray Kroc of health food service. Improve the image and taste of a healthy diet food distinctly superior to other brands.  Become the best Biblical health website and forum for a coaching business. Do the work, build the clientele and watch your business grow!
Painting, woodworking, plumbing, and electrical businesses could expand into “how to seminars.” Help home owners cut costs by offering consulting services, evening hours, video services and classes live and expand online.
Being the first to offer expanded resources may seem risky but it is the added value the general public would be thankful for and keep you busy during traditional slow periods.
Your idea doesn’t have to be original. It only needs to enhance existing parameters. Envision the present status of an industry, object or business as version 1.0, not as a completed idea or finished product.
Start looking at everything as raw opportunity!
Life is an amusement park, waiting for the next trend, change or big idea.
This is the new frontier for those brave enough to dare, dream and care!

Raising the Bar of Leadership!

Hold On

The quest to push “the powers in charge” is simply a call for integrity and accountability. One of the main reasons for the lack of those morals is fear. Management plays the fear card and employees respond. Government practices the same measures. Although those in hallowed offices and chambers view it as a form of strategic marketing management- it's not!

A plan designed to hold people in fear, keeping them from recognizing truth and limiting their resources. In truth, it’s a deployment of walls within a calculated plan to harness your mind and productivity. Business and Government have manipulated the public successfully for years. The plan worked extremely well until it contributed to the fall of the Industrial Age.

Blinded By the Light

Greed, power and corruption led to a blinded future. The outcome few cared about. The end-game played out and the deck was stacked. Those who bought into the cycle of fear lost. Only a few walked away unscathed.

The gatekeepers under those at the helm are actually fueled by a higher degree of fear and caution. The ability to placate both ends of the spectrum, while maintaining position or elective status is a stressful job. Selling out their souls for a title to serve the employees or voters in mass requires the skill to not recognize “the man in the glass.”

Come Together

We need people to become involved in politics and business for honest reasons. The heck with party lines- let’s fix something broke. Recognize the playing field and develop a sound strategic plan based on principals to bring integrity and accountability back to our purpose in life.

Stop the whining and babble. We want honesty, truth and something worth standing up for. We want to feel alive and live a purposeful life.

Last Train to Clarksville

 I believe we have forgotten our strengths and our ability of courage to create change. We’ve become numb from listening too much, believing everyone else’s agenda or just plain given up.

Enough’s- enough, let’s reclaim our spirit, our freedom and our rights.

Mansfield, Ohio- Does it Still Burn?


Back in October, I wrote a blog concerning the 42 acts of arson within the city of Mansfield, Ohio. Interestingly, it became my most viewed blog to date. Even more interesting was the fact that the majority of viewers were not from Mansfield, nor has one comment been received. From June to October we averaged an act of arson every 3.2 days.

The City of Mansfield was coincidentally attempting to pass a safety levy which would hire 3 additional firefighters. The suspicion arose as perhaps the acts of arson were somehow an inside job. On Saturday, November 3rd, we had 2 fires with abandoned buildings setting 3 feet apart. The fires diminished near the voting on November 6th, when the safety levy failed to pass.

So we now have 44 acts of arson within 6 months.

In October, I raised several questions:
  • Why wasn’t the State of Ohio or Federal assistance summoned to assist in the investigation?
  • Why hasn’t our Mayor or Fire Chief sought community meetings seeking information and vigilance?
  • Why has no one come forward with information in lieu of a $5,000 reward?

Some citizens believe the acts were inside fires started to instill fear in the levy voters. Some residents feel it is another typical Mansfield, Ohio cover-up. Some believe it was someone seeking a firefighter job by promoting fear.

Late in October, I contacted a news reporter with our local paper. No response. I left messages. No response. Why?

On Thursday November 1st, the local newspaper ran a story featuring the local Firefighters Union. The Union announced donating $1,000 to the existing $5,000 reward offered by the Ohio Blue Ribbon Arson Committee for information leading to the arrest of the arsonist(s).

The Union also stated it would form a coalition of citizens, service organizations, church groups and neighborhood watch groups to assist in dealing with the acts of arson.

I thought that was interesting since I questioned this back in October.

Within the same interview it was noted the Mansfield Fire Department was awarded a SAFER Grant that would pay for the additional hiring of 15 firefighters for two years. The City of Mansfield so far has waffled at accepting the money. The Mansfield Fire Department has attempted to land this grant money for 3 years. 

Interesting.

Union dues and jobs are (were) at stake. Did the acts of arson have any direct bearing on being awarded the Grant? Is this the reason the fires have quieted? No cards left on the table? The levy failed.

Why is the City of Mansfield reluctant to accept the Grant money? Do they know something?

We do know a few things are certain:

1.     The fires weren’t started by some negligent crack head or drifter. The person(s) know exactly how to start a fire without any evidence.

2.     What better way to scare the poor low-income residents in those fire zones of downtown Mansfield into voting for a levy if you have a wienee roast every 3.2 days!

3.     Somebody somewhere knows who performed those acts of arson.

If anybody has knowledge of who may have started these fires and is afraid to contact the authorities, please contact me. We can work something out.

Meanwhile, the Ohio State Attorney General and the State Fire Marshall have been contacted.
