Waiting for Billy

A year ago, my best friend, Billy Atkins was called home. Rarely does a day go by without thinking of him and it’s still hard to believe he’s gone from our world. I loved him like a brother and I miss him deeply. I know he rests in a better place and one day; we will meet again

Billy was a husband, father, businessman and musician. He was well liked and would give the shirt off his back to help a friend. In our younger days, he would chauffeur me around the countryside until I was sober enough to drive. We would listen to music and talk. I miss those talks.
Both our hearts were in the same place talking about right verses wrong, honesty and our beliefs. We had a lot in common.
I learned at his funeral service that Billy and his wife, Michelle, donated the funding needed to excavate  a well for his cousin’s wonderful orphanage program overseas- Sending Hope International. The program rescues children from the sex slave trade and provides hope. The water used to quench those thirsty children will always be a gift from Billy and Michelle Atkins.Their generosity touches lives daily and is truly something meaningful!

When Billy and I were single, I recall him always being the last to be ready. Whenever a group of us were going somewhere, we always waited for him. We did so because, we knew it wouldn’t be the same without him.

But the day Billy was called home, I believe he was ready.
About a week before his passing he sent me a message and told me how proud he was of me. In 40 years of friendship, he never uttered those words. It was almost like a parting message; as if he knew his time was short.
Billy’s life was a song of epic and majestic proportions. The melody was his good cheer and the chorus was his big heart. The progression of his life  was a gift and his chords to us. His finale brought us to tears.
Now- he is waiting on us.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Michelle Atkins, Dawn Kamen and their families, relatives and friends!

The Wisdom to Know the Difference!

People often worry about circumstances out of their control. Worrying used to be one of my “other jobs.” Over the years, I have battled with creating “what if” scenarios and nearly every time the situation I feared- never happened. Slowly, I’ve realized spending time and energy by focusing on “what if” is a monumental loss of productivity and growth.

In A.A.meetings, one of the common slogans is “Let go and Let God.” Carrying worries, resentment and grudges not only lessons your chance of sobriety; it prevents one from moving forward with growth, opportunity and spirituality. The biggest factors most people find troubling are jobs, relationships and money. Mentally beating yourself-up over something that may never happen is never a solution.
Even if our worst fear becomes reality wouldn’t we be better served to focus on a solution after it transpires? Planning ahead for a possible catastrophe is foolish. By responding in this negative manner you are placing yourself as a “victim” with your mind and actions. Conditioning yourself to this attitude devalues your self-esteem, opens yourself up for easy defeat and guarantees failure.
Obsessing over negative situations should be replaced by focusing on changing the things you can make a difference with the outcome. Instead of being “stuck” inside your own prison walls, focus on doing something to help someone else. Checkout of the pity-party and lift your spirit up by doing something inspirational and motivational. If we spent half of the time doing something positive, instead of negative; our jobs, relationships and financial situations would improve immensely.
Worrying give us the excuse to do nothing. We sabotage ourselves due to fear. After all, worry is nothing but fear. It’s that little voice of resistance in our head attempting to stop you from doing great work, urging you to stay with the status quo and never venture outside the hut.
Several years ago, I was looking at the possibility of having lung cancer. After a botched biopsy procedure, I had to have major surgery to remove tissue for another biopsy. My time wasn’t focused on worrying if I had cancer or not. My concern was for my wife and would she have the financial stability to live without me?
Once those fears were resolved I was completely at peace with myself situation and God.

Now, one would reason having a terminal illness would send someone over the cliff with worry and fear. Especially me, I am a master of worry. I learned it’s the little things in life that keeps us in fear and prevents us from doing what we were put on this Earth to do. The big obstacles usually take care of themselves. Trust me, it’s true.
More importantly, it’s the wisdom to know the difference!

Do Something Meaningful

"Buckeye"

In a previous blog, I reported spotting a dog in a nearby park system upon driving home from work. I recalled reading on an employee’s bulletin board a story of a missing dog. The dog owner’s home had been burglarized and the thieves peppered sprayed the young dog. The door must have been open and the traumatized pup ran away despite wearing a radio-controlled collar.
I returned to my place of work and contacted the owners.
I drove by the park area again the next day (Friday) after work after I previously contacted the owners. The mixed-breed pup darted across Park Avenue West in Mansfield, Ohio during rush-hour traffic. How it kept from getting hit was probably an act of divinity on that icy day. I turned the car around and spotted the dog near the entrance to South Park.
I stopped the car and (not remembering the dogs name from the “wanted” poster), got out of the car, attempting to coax the young dog towards me. He looked at me long enough that I recognized the radio-controlled collar on his neck. The dog turned around, pranced away and after about 20 yards distance from me, stopped, barked once, and headed back towards the busy intersection.
I had failed.
I drove back to my place of work and called the dog owners who confirmed from my description of the collar and coat, it was their missing dog “Buckeye.” They said they would drive down to our park system and look for the dog. I informed them I would also go back and search. I found the owners in the park and we couldn’t spot “Buckeye” at all.
We were disappointed and the owner stated he would walk through the entire park on Saturday. My wife and I drove through the park system on Saturday evening after a wedding searching for the dog. I know the drive scared her as we drove around North Lake Park and were followed closely by another car. The only relief came when we noticed two police cruisers sitting in the park.
At this point “Buckeye” had been missing for a week and the cold weather along with another new snowstorm and freezing temperatures had me realizing the young pup’s chances of surviving the elements, traffic and lack of food were running out.
I attempted to drive through the parks the next week after work and whenever I went through town. Nothing, Buckeye had disappeared.
Earlier this week we had a fire in downtown Mansfield, Ohio. It was reported two dogs died during the fire inside the house which was being used strangely enough, for storage. I prayed “Buckeye” wasn’t one of those poor dogs.
Then I received this email today:
Jim,
Were you the person who called me about the missing dog?! I hope so because I wanted to let you know we found him in Middle Park on the Saturday before Christmas! He was very dirty and smelly but otherwise OK and he slept for the next 3 days! Thank you so much for your persistence, Buckeye made it home for Christmas!
Ellen

My prayers had been answered. The young pup had been re-united after a terrible ordeal of theft. The last day of the year I realized this would be the most meaningful achievement I accomplished all year. I put my heart and soul in finding “Buckeye” and was successful. I am happy for the family.

Happy New Year and Thank you

T'was the Night before Christmas!

I wanted to take the opportunity to wish all of my readers and followers a Merry Christmas. I am already looking ahead towards the New Year for some exciting changes including new products to develop, some exciting interviews for the Rust Belt Chronicles and growth.
But for now, let’s focus on the true meaning of Christmas and celebrate with family, friends and (even) strangers. Going out of our way to make someone’s day special and memorable is worthy and noble. Putting a smile on somebody’s face is a way to show we care.
It’s the season of giving, not receiving.
Helping the homeless, visiting the nursing home or reaching out to someone in need are ways to share the Christmas spirit with others.
Last week, I noticed a flyer with a photo of a missing dog at my workplace. Their home had been broke into a week ago and the robbers sprayed their pet with pepper spray and although it had a radio-controlled collar it escaped from their home and yard.
While driving near our 3-park area on a icy day after work on Friday, I spotted the dog, turned the car around and pulled into the park to coax the young pup. It stared at me, turned around and ran the opposite direction towards traffic and another park.
I drove back to work, got the owner’s phone number from the flyer and contacted the couple; who verified it was their dog. The couple drove to the park which I already had returned too, to help find “Buckeye.” The mixed-breed (part shepherd), white with brown spots, was nowhere to be found.
After attending a wedding Saturday evening, my wife and I drove through the park system to locate the dog, to no avail. The owner said he was going to walk through the parks on Saturday. I hope they find their pup!
At least I gave them hope in finding that puppy!
On Christmas Eve day, I took a drive to our local Toy Time organization to drop off some toys for needy children. Unfortunately, they were closed. So my next thought was to watch for a child I could surprise with a few gifts. After picking up some groceries and walking to my car; another car parked beside me in the parking lot. In the car were a mother and a little girl around 5 years old.
I asked the mother of the small child if she would be interested in the gifts. The mother asked her daughter and her little face lit up with happiness. I gave her the gifts and she thanked me and wished me- a Merry Christmas.
One out of two good deeds isn’t bad because it’s the thought that matters most!
I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!

Failing, Losing and Winning

We don’t encourage people to be creative. Rarely, do we ask people to do something meaningful.
We spend far more time telling folks:
·        No- you can’t.
·        You have no experience.
·        Somebody else has already done it.
·       Nobody's ever done it.
·        You don’t have the money, education or time.
·        It won’t work.
·        You better get permission.
·        I’d talk with a lawyer first.
And the ultimate sabotage responses:
·        You’ll fail.
·        You’ll never make it.
·        You’ll go broke and starve.
·        You won’t be able to survive.
·        You’ll die.
How often do we say- “That’s a great idea, I think you should go for it?”
That’s what I thought.
We shoot someone’s hope, dream and possible future down quickly. If everyone followed our own fearful advice, there’d be no electricity, surgeons, automobiles, medicine, clean water or technical device to read this blog.
Somehow, I believe we can do better. We allow fear to keep us from doing the very things we need to do. Persuading others through our own inadequacies and lack of insight to do nothing ensures we never step out of our comfort zone, make progress or change the world.
Failing is a far better gift than doing nothing.
Losing is a lesson in improvement.
And winning is the opportunity to start over again!
Don’t listen to the advice of naysayer’s, family members or best friends. Live your dreams. Seek out those who encourage your goals. Surround yourself with positive people who transcend hope, imagination and fuel your passion to persist with excellence.
We’ve only got today and it’s our chance to do-

A New Paper in Town?

Recently, I came up with the idea of niche marketing The Rust Belt Chronicles. Sometimes success isn't about something new. It can be achieved by tweaking a common idea and staying ahead of the curve. Doing something better at the right time, place and cost.
Perhaps, I could turn The Rust Belt Chronicles into a free local news magazine and challenge the status quo or I could just continue my current blog format.
Part of my reasoning is due to the lack of offering of in-depth local news coverage of stuff that matters, including investigative reporting. I’ve observed the reduction of articles within our local paper to the point of charging for online viewing while offering less substantial local coverage with additional regional network “filler” stories. It wouldn’t be unrealistic to see our newspaper reduce production to fewer days a week, much like The Cleveland Plain Dealer has proposed.
Today, we live in a society with the so many options to choose from and most of the “breaking news” is instant. No need to wait for tomorrow’s newspaper delivery. Those days are long gone.
While the newspaper industry has shrunk considerably Internet sources have exploded. The masses aren’t dependent on a local newspaper delivery system. Few care enough to subscribe. So the solution may is to change the way we do business.
Given those circumstances my idea morphed into an entirely different style of newspaper. A free magazine/journal that consists of only the best local stories: heart-warming stories, investigative stories, articles that give the local public the “inside” skinny including: court proceedings, fines, divorce proceedings, building permits, titles/transfers, events and obituaries. Editorials and blogs would be included. The rest of the detail is short and pithy.
No need to go into details on sports or weather. Those interested in what the Cleveland Indians did last night already follow their favorite sources for details. If I am travelling to Nashville or planning a cook-out tomorrow my best source of weather advice isn’t going to be the local paper.
If you can’t offer a superior story why bother when other sources specialize in that media? It’s just added noise in a crowded arena. Why charge for substance that is mostly open source news anyway?
I had a couple of hurdles to overcome to make this project a reality.
Would advertisers respond by supporting a local news magazine contingent on reporting un-biased news contribute if The Rust Belt Chronicles didn’t cater to the “Good Ole Boy’s Club” in Mansfield, Ohio? I believe so.
I am not interested in their deep pockets, power or position. Our ability to change from becoming the newRust Belt Capital of the World” is dependent on new leaders, thinkers and businesses to replace the selfless promotion of the few who continue to line their pockets while we deteriorate from within.
The deciding factor on whether to attempt this project is based on one factor:
Does the local public care enough to follow a free news magazine with a goal to turn this town around?
Years ago, we manufactured great products for people that cared about quality. As time passed and choices increased fewer people cared about quality. Once manufacturers recognized the people didn’t care about quality, the standard became mediocre products in mass for people who didn’t care.
So, does a local news magazine produced by those who care interest you?

Making a Ruckus and Turning Pro

“The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire.”
Malcolm Gladwell, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

You can tell when you are making an impact. The ruckus usually begins after the truth is discovered and the curtain is slowly opened.
Instead of well-wishers, the only noise will be whispers of denial. As the focus expands and the message spreads, the whispers become a loud roar of threats and the attempt to ruin your credibility begins. When the sound is deafening you've hit the motherlode. The risk is great and the reward is huge.
Most fold their cards and go home.
The battle has now reached the tipping point.
Those with the guts, patience and passion push through it.
You've discovered the meaning of turning pro.
Suddenly, the story becomes about the war, odds, obstacles and the effort. Everyone has an opinion and the rouse begins. You’re a minuscule hero of sorts.
The Giant has been defeated.
You understand success.
And now it’s time to choose another battle and make a difference again.
This is a true warrior!

What have you done to overcome a battle and be successful? Do you fight for just causes to help others? Or do you just surrender to fear? I’d love to hear your comments and thoughts.

The Government Cure?

Document photo used courtesy of: roberhuffstutter.

While reading Wisdom Meets Passion: WhenGenerations Collide and Collaborate written by Dan Miller and Jarad Angaza, I came upon an interesting piece of information. There are people living in the United States, who for three or four generations have been living on government welfare programs.

Obviously, the system has failed us a long time ago.

I have sympathy for those who've lost a job, family or home. What I oppose is how a system designed to temporarily help those in need actually keeps people “stuck” in the system.

The current setup provides no hope, inspiration or incentive to improve their lives or become employable.

Free Ride

While attending school, each quarter I noticed a trend. I would see the arrival of many new students receiving classes and books paid for by state and government subsidization. In most cases, the students slowly dropped out of class. I recall several women bringing their babies to class.

It irked me to no end that most had no interest in learning or obtaining a degree for free.  I repeat- for Free! Wasting tax payer’s money, each semester, year after year!

Those folks didn’t have ambition to study or drag themselves to class. They didn’t seem to understand the purpose for attending class or care. Those that attended beyond a week or two couldn’t bother to do their homework assignments. A majority would withdraw or be absent during our first scheduled test.

The colleges are making a nice income from the subsidizations. In truth it’s just another free ride for some folks. I actually believe in some cases those “entitled students” thought someone would hand them a degree just for showing up. It was as if they were isolated from the world.

Why? Because our system has taught them that there is no requirement, no cost, and in most cases no hope. Set back, enjoy the ride, everybody owes you something because the state and government have been paying you for injustices for generations.

Socialism is Alive and Well in America.

We’ve successfully taught entitlement to scores of U.S. citizens. Too earn their trust, buy their vote; we’ve keep generation’s dependant on assistance, while believing the Federal Government is looking after their best interests. In truth it has served to keep those folks trapped within their poor existence.

Due to the fact that the system hasn’t given you whatever it is you want the choice is to blame someone. Become angry, resentful and filled with hate. Blame everyone, the rich, the middle class and anyone else who doesn’t reward you with entitlements.

Mandatory Testing

We should have drug testing mandatory for anyone seeking welfare. There must be an indoctrination or introductory class for students (required to attend with guidelines established and met) prior to subsidized educational funding. Let’s not waste our time, their time or precious funding courtesy of the U.S. tax payers.

The Government Cure?

If you have no desire or passion to apply yourself or do the work, no amount of subsidized money will correct your problem. No magic wand will touch your mind and make something happen. No government or state can cure your problem.

It isn’t where you live or what you’ve lacked. It doesn’t matter at all in today’s world. We have choices available to us more than any other previous generation.

Many people have overcome (physical, psychological and emotional) obstacles in life to better themselves. Some of us have to work harder or longer than others in order to achieve results.

The truth is change begins within you!

Book Review- Wisdom Meets Passion: When Generations Collide and Collaborate.

Last week, I received the new book co-written by author and life coach Dan Miller and his son, Jarad Angaza entitled- Wisdom Meets Passion: When Generations Collide and Collaborate.
Dan Miller is the best-selling author of No More Dreaded Monday’s and 48 Days to the Work You Love. Dan Miller has two websites offering community assistance, classes and podcasts at 48days.com and 48days.net.  Jarad Angaza is the president and co-founder of KEZA, an ethical fashion label in East Africa.

Special Prize

I purchased the book with a pledge on a special offer through indigogo.com. The book arrived quickly and the shipping envelope had a label with a special instructions to call a specific phone number “before doing anything else.”

The package was like a box of Cracker Jacks. What would I hear or receive from calling the phone number? What would I discover inside the package? Like a child, my mind began to wonder.
Upon calling the number, I received a (fittingly) 48-second message from author Dan Miller thanking me for participating in the project along with an encouraging message. I’ve never seen anyone else offer this nice little gesture in regards towards anything I’ve ever purchased.

Inside the package was the UBUNTU medallion necklace designed by Jarad Angaza and Hannah Woodard at KEZA. Nepali refugees through Hope Rise (a Nashville, Tennessee based charity) assembled the necklaces. Hope Rise assists the Nepali refugees with integration into Nashville, Tennessee. Each of the beautiful medallions sold allows the refugees income and dignity.
I removed the autographed book from the envelope and the bright cover artwork immediately attracts your attention. As I opened the book, I noticed a couple more “little surprises.” Inside the front cover was a post card size promo photo of Dan and Jarad and a “Wisdom meets Passion” book marker (featuring additional dowloadable files). The added gifts show the genuine appreciation of the authors for the purchase through indigogo.com.

Added Stuff

Separate from the book, folks who joined the 48days.net group, Wisdom meets Passion- were able to download a couple of free eBooks, to go along with the hard cover version of the book. It’s safe to say Dan and his son, Jarad understand the power of added value to a customer. Thank you Dan and Jarad!

The Review

Once I started to read this extra-ordinary book, it was difficult to put down. Of all the books I’ve read this year it is easily my favorite- hands down.

The wisdom and passion of Dan and Jared is immense throughout every chapter. The motivation and hope gained through reading Wisdom Meets Passion: When Generations Collide and Collaborate is inspiring, gratifying and immeasurable.
Dan’s view of wisdom and passion is traditionally based ideology, so the older folks (like me) can easily relate too. While Jared’s view is on the edge, off the cuff and raw, perhaps relating better with a younger audience or a different cultural mindset.

Together, their views present quite different ways to arrive at a similar path for success. Separately, Dan and Jarad’s methods stand on their own merits and remind us that not everything is accomplished the same way, while breaking down- what really matters in life.
I have waited several years for a new book from Dan Miller and I can honestly say this is his best work yet! The message is joyful and resonates with words of wisdom and passion. This is a book I will repeatedly read and study.

Wisdom Meets Passion: When Generations Collide and Collaborate is the book you must read if you’re serious about changing your life or the world you live in.
I highly recommend it!

Does it Matter?

So many days, I have questioned if I am making a difference. Is staying awake half the night seeking clarity, thought, and silence to produce art worth it? Is the money spent on books and searching information to improve viewership worth it?

Does it matter?

Photo used courtesy of: Leeks.
The lack of comments within my blogs, often make me wonder.

Today was an unusual day. I was made aware of my responsibilities towards my readers and friends. Tonight, I realized the impact on people’s lives I made through my experiences of creating a friendship with one of my former band mates and one of my blog readers.

We often don’t get the opportunity or time for people to understand our nature, personality or core values. Sadly, most people are so busy in their daily lives; we all become lost in the noise and shuffle. Daily schedules, families, chores, and work permits us little time for ourselves or to reflect on the most important things in our lives.
I can’t tell you how good it feels to receive positive feedback from people. To know people understand where your heart is and respect you is something I cherish.

I couldn’t be happier knowing that despite the fact I am writing late into the night for two years; I am making a difference in some people’s lives and all those little victories eventually leads to a larger scale of followers, known as a tribe.

People are reading my blogs. I am slowly growing my business. I’d much rather build slow. Slow I can handle. When we rush- we tend to look for results quickly. When the desired results aren’t fulfilled, we become discouraged or quit. For me, it’s more like crash and burn.

But today was different.

It was my wake-up call to responsibility, an opportunity to feel I am a part of something special, that I started, and someone cares.
It was my time to reflect on something meaningful- that does matter!

I want to thank both individuals for inspiring me.
