Goodbye Cubicle Nation

I received a new lease on life when my job was eliminated at cubicle nation. Quite some time ago, I underwent a metamorphosis of sorts toward my own work mindset.
For years, I questioned why an organization would want to treat their employees poorly. I just couldn’t comprehend the concept. It was so backward, toxic and unnecessary. I started to question people in upper management who had retired. They quickly agreed it was a sick way to run a business.
Someone actually tried to explain the business practice is taught in colleges. I scoured the Internet hoping to find the class or subject. After my research produced nothing (other than psychological dysfunctional modes of management), I thought I hit a dead-end. Why is it a freaking secret!
Best Selling Author, Seth Godin, wrote a book called- Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? Seth described enough of the Industrial Age philosophy in the book to finally understand what I dealing with my entire working life. I live in what once a very dominant manufacturing city. Like most typical Rust Belt cities we’ve been decimated by the end of the Industrial Age. Although I worked in a non-factory environment it’s run with the same type of management mentality as a factory.
It’s fear-based management. The main requirement is conforming mentally and physically day after day, year after year. Your livelihood is held over your head with fear; through rumors, threats, evaluations and meetings. The reverberation extends for a period of time until something new is presented to show your allegiance too.
The funny thing was once I understood the mindset, I knew how to tune it out of my mind and not play the game. Gradually, I was able to separate myself physically and mentally from the silliness of the system. I began to realize my own creativity and ideas would be my only way out of this train wreck. So I started to focus on myself and what my best options for success would be.
That is when I started to change my thinking. If I woke-up and a good idea came to me, it was worth my time to write it down; even if it meant arriving to work late.
At that point I knew what I could do mattered more than what I had been doing! I felt empowered and my life suddenly had meaning.
I knew I wasn’t happy. I knew my career was basically a dead-end job. I no longer cared to be a hamster on the wheel or just exist. Life is too short to spend it living in fear.
So now I’m a free agent. I have no fear and no boss. I don’t set an alarm clock or commute to work. I can have fun or work hard when I want. My stress is gone.
I’ve left cubicle nation.
And it feels darn good!

The Strategic Plan

It’s been an interesting week here in the heart of the Rust Belt.

On Tuesday, I joined my wife as being laid-off from the same employer. Nearly 65 years of loyalty, wiped-out six months apart. With no insurance for either one of us beginning in February it’s been a race to take care of a three-month pharmaceutical supply and look into a surgery I put-off for a year or more.

Good News/Bad News

After visiting a physician (who now practices with a different healthcare system) for what I believed was a meniscus tear, the x-rays and MRI came back normal. The bad news is: I have a rare bone disease that causes my knee to buckle invariably while walking. Which equates to a bigger problem- who will hire a 56-year old male that walks like a crippled person at times?

Watcha’ Gonna’ Do?

The best option all along was to hire myself. I’ve gotten several ideas in mind to generate my own income and no longer be “someone’s cog in the system.” I am amazed in the short time I’ve been unemployed with the ideas I’ve gotten and hopefully a couple of those projects will pay the bills. We are only limited by the constraints- we place upon ourselves.

Being the Best

I was blown away by the accommodations the physician and his staff attempted to arrange after explaining my insurance would expire in a week. My former employer’s orthopedic department nearly laughed at me on the phone when given the same opportunity. Not quite the “expert care” advertized! My co-payment would have been less if the surgery and physician care was done in-house.
Upon explaining our situation to the physician, his jaw dropped and his comment was: “Unbelievable.” It was pleasant to learn his views and thoughts were exactly the same as mine. He truly sympathizes with the employees affected by the Strategic Plan and layoffs. I overheard his nurses say: “I’ve never had to arrange a standard procedure so quickly.”
You and your staff have my loyalty, trust and heart. I knew you would come through on such short notice and I am so grateful for your efforts! I will never forget your integrity, passion and commitment towards your patients.

The Theater of Pain

We were told less than 1% (25 or so) of the employees would be affected by the layoff, but judging from reports I am hearing, it could have been more. The organization did not file a report with Ohio WARN for a mass layoff (of 50 or more employees) so It's possible another layoff could happen. During my travels around town today, I am hearing word on the street of their partnership deal has already been signed and the average citizen can’t  understand why it is being kept secret from the employees.
My thoughts are it makes the partnering party look like the good guy once the deal is announced and the layoffs are already done. I have yet to hear of any management or administration positions being eliminated. My wife believes around 14 LPN’s will be affected after providing advice to that group. Sadly, I learned of another couple who was/is employed and signed mortgage papers for a house the night before her spouse was laid-off, Wednesday.
Many of us had decades of employment and are over the age of 50, some folks affected have spouses or children with disabilities and their former employer was the only source for affordable insurance. Some of those people are single mothers with children. My heart and prayers go out to all of those families.

My Pride and Joy

Last night, I wrote the introduction to my new forthcoming book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This weekend I will focus on laying out the chapters. For me, writing is the most therapeutic exercise possible.
It shouldn’t take but a month or two to finish this expose. My original idea was to wait until I retired to write the book. Thanks to my former employer that day will likely be February 1st!

A New Paper in Town?

Recently, I came up with the idea of niche marketing The Rust Belt Chronicles. Sometimes success isn't about something new. It can be achieved by tweaking a common idea and staying ahead of the curve. Doing something better at the right time, place and cost.
Perhaps, I could turn The Rust Belt Chronicles into a free local news magazine and challenge the status quo or I could just continue my current blog format.
Part of my reasoning is due to the lack of offering of in-depth local news coverage of stuff that matters, including investigative reporting. I’ve observed the reduction of articles within our local paper to the point of charging for online viewing while offering less substantial local coverage with additional regional network “filler” stories. It wouldn’t be unrealistic to see our newspaper reduce production to fewer days a week, much like The Cleveland Plain Dealer has proposed.
Today, we live in a society with the so many options to choose from and most of the “breaking news” is instant. No need to wait for tomorrow’s newspaper delivery. Those days are long gone.
While the newspaper industry has shrunk considerably Internet sources have exploded. The masses aren’t dependent on a local newspaper delivery system. Few care enough to subscribe. So the solution may is to change the way we do business.
Given those circumstances my idea morphed into an entirely different style of newspaper. A free magazine/journal that consists of only the best local stories: heart-warming stories, investigative stories, articles that give the local public the “inside” skinny including: court proceedings, fines, divorce proceedings, building permits, titles/transfers, events and obituaries. Editorials and blogs would be included. The rest of the detail is short and pithy.
No need to go into details on sports or weather. Those interested in what the Cleveland Indians did last night already follow their favorite sources for details. If I am travelling to Nashville or planning a cook-out tomorrow my best source of weather advice isn’t going to be the local paper.
If you can’t offer a superior story why bother when other sources specialize in that media? It’s just added noise in a crowded arena. Why charge for substance that is mostly open source news anyway?
I had a couple of hurdles to overcome to make this project a reality.
Would advertisers respond by supporting a local news magazine contingent on reporting un-biased news contribute if The Rust Belt Chronicles didn’t cater to the “Good Ole Boy’s Club” in Mansfield, Ohio? I believe so.
I am not interested in their deep pockets, power or position. Our ability to change from becoming the newRust Belt Capital of the World” is dependent on new leaders, thinkers and businesses to replace the selfless promotion of the few who continue to line their pockets while we deteriorate from within.
The deciding factor on whether to attempt this project is based on one factor:
Does the local public care enough to follow a free news magazine with a goal to turn this town around?
Years ago, we manufactured great products for people that cared about quality. As time passed and choices increased fewer people cared about quality. Once manufacturers recognized the people didn’t care about quality, the standard became mediocre products in mass for people who didn’t care.
So, does a local news magazine produced by those who care interest you?

Take the Money and Run

We live in a society where truth is often overlooked to support incoming money through marketing strategy. Nothing is really sacred or off limits, particularly in the rust belt, when seeking funding.

Stories can be spread to justify the means of private funding, elections or the passing of a levy When funding is by means of corporate money or a total lack of backers, the spin begins.
Urgency of power is all that matters. If an idea can be bought, it can be sold.
Why do Issues desperately in need of fixing remain broken for decades, while “special Interests” are seemingly satisfied?

Once upon a time, specific unwritten standards existing such as truth, honor and dignity were important. Not anymore. If someone has enough time, presence and money, the story can be developed, just like Hollywood.
Repeat the chant often enough and it becomes believable.
Few question the motive, details or accuracy.
Worse yet- few people really care!

Groundhog Day?

Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.

Enough is enough!

It’s time we stood up and stop the bleeding, bullying and bureaucracy.

Let’s turn around the Rust Belt by taking ownership and lead it in a new direction.

It’s time to rewrite the rules and take a different path.

Otherwise, every day will just be another Groundhog Day!

Don't Stop Believin'

While writing and self-publishing my last book, instead of receiving positive remarks many of the comments were negative. People don’t want you to attempt to do what they don’t have the patience or interest to do.

Those sometimes well-meaning comments were tough on me because I was doing something meaningful for myself and my core audience. Those naysayers could have been roadblocks, despite the hurt- I forged ahead.

I accomplished my goal and succeeded in realizing I could create a future platform of income simply by persisting in my desire to do something meaningful.

Those same people now say: “I can’t believe you did that. I couldn’t have done it.”

The truth is those folks won’t take the time, do the research or take a chance of doing something they’ve never done before. They’ve convinced themselves to accept mediocrity.

It’s easy to live a daily routine and never challenge yourself. Living in the Rust Belt has taught us to follow the instruction manual. We aren’t supposed to step outside the box or think for ourselves. We might fail and in the process actually learn something new and discover we are capable of doing things we never thought possible.

No, we’re better off shackled to a job we hate in order to survive, until we are no longer useable or have too much tenure; then we are tossed to the curb and replaced with a younger employee.

I believe there is a huge difference between surviving and living. The difference between living your dreams and living to dream is distinct. Living in the Rust Belt has stolen the dreams for many over the years and all that remains is a broken spirit.

The person who says something is impossible should not interrupt the person who is doing it.” - Chinese proverb

I no longer accept “side offers” or wish to join someone’s fantasy league. I refuse to allow anyone to derail my plans or break my spirit.

In the months ahead, I will accomplish many new goals to help those in need of turning their lives around. The need for hope in the Rust Belt is great and the chance to start a new journey and assist people in creating opportunity in their lives is exciting!

Stay tuned for more information in another upcoming blog.
